‘When you get the environment right, every single one of us has the capacity to do remarkable things. And, more importantly, others have that capacity too.’
Wise words from Simon Sinek.
As you might have guessed, I recently watched his Ted Talk ‘Why good leaders make you feel safe’ (for the 100th time).
You see, it never gets old. And the message is so poignant, I think it deserves some new airtime—in the form of this audio blog today.
In this Talk, Sinek discusses what it is to be a leader, and I love what he has to say.
He talks about leadership as the responsibility to create an environment inside which your people feel safe, and trust one another—only then will your team thrive.
At first glance, this may sound a little flimsy, but when you look at it on a sociological level it makes complete sense.
Think about it… way back when humans were first starting out, how do you think we managed to avoid all of the perils that existed to destroy us?
How did we survive drought, escape predators or beat illnesses?
We formed communities. Or, as Sinek has dubbed them, ‘circles of safety’.
Inside these circles we learnt that if we could trust one another, if we felt safe, then we could cooperate, and as a result reap the benefits—thriving as a species.
Fast forward to modern day, and this concept is still deeply ingrained in us.
‘When we feel safe inside the organization, we will naturally combine our talents and our strengths and work tirelessly to face the dangers outside and seize the opportunities.’
If not, we expend our energy trying to protect ourselves.
As a leader in business you have little/no control over external dangers like new technologies or the economy. But you DO have control over the environment you create for your team.
If you want your people to do more than just what you tell them to do, take heed of this.
Here at JTN, we take pride in our ability to motivate people to consistently perform to the best of their abilities. In fact, we’re so proud of it, we turned it into one our services. If you’re looking to makeover how things work in your team, take a look at our Team Accelerator Program.
